"Iron Queen," 24.25 in x 17.5 in, Oil on Wood.

Iron Queen

Translated by Tony Philippou

Goddess of planting seeds and nurturing plants Persephone was out amongst her elements and saw a particularly afflicted narcissus (daffodil) that needed attention.

As Persephone reached for this Narcissus, Hades seized her and brought her back to the Underworld. Her mother Demeter searched everywhere to no avail, until Helios the all-seeing sun told Demeter how Hades abducted her.

Zeus sent Hermes to obtain Persephone; hearing of this Hades tricks her into eating seeds from a pomegranate. This act binds her to return to the Underworld for six months out of the year leaving the earth barren and cold. Here she is the Iron Queen, mistress to the lord of the Underworld. Her stare pierces the soul and convinces its victim of the beauty of death.

It is not until she emerges from the Underworld to take her seat at Mt. Olympus does the earth bear its fertility.

GROUP SHOW IN LONDON

Upcoming this June 11th I will have a piece out in the UK at The LONDON MILES GALLERY
curated by THINKSPACE GALLERY

ARGUS & IO
translated by Tony Philippou

Hera suspects that her husband the Lightning god Zeus is out with a mistress named Io. Which is exactly what was going down. Zeus anticipating his wife's desire to chastise him in his treachery seeks a more elusive solution. He turns Io into a beautiful white heifer.

Not buying that shit, Hera demands that he give her the Heifer. Reluctantly Zeus does so and Hera places Io under the watch of a giant named Argus. With a hundred eyes Argus watched over Io before being slain by Hermes on a reconnaissance mission ordered by Zeus. It is said that Hermes lulled the one hundred eyed giant to sleep with his acoustic guitar and then merked him, meaning he caught a bad one.
In remembrance of Argus, Hera placed his one hundred eyes in the plumage of a peacock. So now you Know and you can't say that you don't. NAHMEAN.
